Superb but could be better
By John C from Surrey , 09 Nov 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
Very good live recording of a stage production.
Orla Boylan delivers a fantastic performance as Tatiana. There is a passionate intensity to her acting and beautiful singing.
Vladimir Gluschak as Onegin was a bit of a problem for me. I found his acting to be somewhat hammy. He seemed to be sometimes singing out of the side of his mouth as he grimaced and sneered intently. Vladimir certainly has a very good voice but I just don't feel we get hear it's best qualities here.
Tenor Michael Konig impressed me immensely as Lenksy with a stirring energetic performance. His singing is heartfelt, powerful and of a very nice quality.
Michail Schelomianski receives well deserved rapturous applause for his superb singing as Prince Gremin.
The DVD sound quality is good but not great. Dolby stereo. The singing sounds clear as does the orchestra though the music never really packs the punch that a full surround sound recording could.
Some of the english subtitles have the ends of sentences clipped off. This is just a very slight annoyance.
All in all highly recommended.- Was this review helpful to you?
