A Thought Provoking Movie
By Bluesman (74 reviews) from Derbys , 22 Aug 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
Films about the making of a movie are never that well received, usually because they are a challenge for most directors and as a consequence don't come out too well. However I'm pleased to say, this one is an exception to that rule.
The film is set in Bolivia in the year 2000 with a film crew making a movie about Christopher Columbus, not about the swash buckling part of his life discovering new lands but about some of the awful legacies he left with the Spanish exploiting and plundering both the countries wealth and people. But all this film making is set with a back drop of modern times (the year 2000) where we see exploitation of the same lands and people still happening, this time through multi-national companies.
This is an extremely thought provoking movie with multi-layered storylines that would prove difficult for most directors but Iciar Bollain excellently manages this task.
Gael Garcia Bernal gives a reasonably good performance as the movie director but the best acting comes from his Production Director Luis Tosar.
In summary, this film may not be your first choice but once you start watching it, you are hooked.- Was this review helpful to you?

(19)GRIPPPING DRAMA WITH A SHARP EDGE
By GAVINFLEMING (17 reviews) from Edinburgh , 03 Apr 2013Gripping drama set in Bolivia, this is reminiscent of Werner Herzog's 'Fitzcarraldo', in tackling exploitation of indigenous people through the vanities of Western sensibilities, in this case a film crew. The parallels between the fictional movie about Columbus's brutal treatment of the Indian people and the growing protests against the privatisation of water in the name of market foreces make this a gripping watch from beginning to end.- Was this review helpful to you?

An alternative to Hollywood
By Janno (1 review) , 21 Feb 2013One of the best films I've seen recently. Asked good questions about repeating history, moral dilemmas, politics and end of empire. Actor who played native Indian was outstanding. Brought tears to my eyes.- Was this review helpful to you?

Clever film within a film
By calnfa (43 reviews) from cheltenham , 30 Jan 2013I really liked this film. I wasn't sure what to expect but it's a film within a film, based on true stories and real events ( both historic and more recent) really well researched, thought provoking, and the format is very clever. Bit slow to start, but stick with it and you'll be impressed. Its worth reading the 'extra' about how the film came about, too, if you liked it. Recommended.- Was this review helpful to you?
