Taken from a bestseller, this is a studied, rather than exciting film. As an elderly mothers life begins to wane, her memories take over on her deathbed and through murmours and dream talk, she imparts details about her young life to her daughters that they knew nothing abot previosuly. This has the effect of answering some of the daughters unanswered questions from their youth, as well as impacting their decisions on the current state of their lives. This is a superbly acted film, and the talent present portrays the subject superbly. The downside, is that it is a tad ponderous and overlong for some, and it might not hold your attention for the whole 117 minutes.
I found this film very moving, particularly thanks to the strong acting of Toni Collette, Mamie Gummel and Vanessa Redgrave. I think the film suffers from being overpopulated with famous actors, even the fabulous Meryl Streep who seemed merely to make an almost cameo appearance. I didn't quite find the central love story believable as it seemed to happen in an instant. Claire Danes is delightful in the main role but I was put off by how little she and Redgrave resembled each other given that they were playing the same character at different ages. I felt the issues examined in the film were merely touched on and resolved in quite a cliched way but many of the scenes involving Redgrave's aged Ann Grant were beautiful and had me weeping.
Definately worth seeing - have the tissues ready and enjoy stepping back into the Ivy league NE seaboard of the 1950s.

I suppose the closest challenger I can think of would be The Hours. Coincidentally, or not, novelist Michael Cunningham is responsible for the screenplay here, based on Susan Minot's best-seller. Ironically, while Evening affects an even split between then and now,... Read more
