Taken from a bestseller, this is a studied, rather than exciting film. As an elderly mothers life begins to wane, her memories take over on her deathbed and through murmours and dream talk, she imparts details about her young life to her daughters that they knew nothing abot previosuly. This has the effect of answering some of the daughters unanswered questions from their youth, as well as impacting their decisions on the current state of their lives. This is a superbly acted film, and the talent present portrays the subject superbly. The downside, is that it is a tad ponderous and overlong for some, and it might not hold your attention for the whole 117 minutes.
This film was FAR to slow for me. I tried to watch it 4 times and never got past the first half hour without falling asleep! Didn't like it at all.
It's been a while since a single movie mustered a roster of actresses like this (in order of seniority): Vanessa Redgrave, Eileen Atkins, Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, Toni Collette, Natasha Richardson, Claire Danes, and Mamie Gummer. I suppose the closest challenger I can think of would be The Hours. Coincidentally, or not, novelist Michael Cunningham is responsible for the screenplay here, based on Susan Minot's best-seller.
