    [Highly rated reviewer]

I watched this film as part of a double bill one afternoon at a local cinema. On the end of this I watched The Exorcist. Event Horizon left me feeling truly disturbed.

A crew venture into space to recover a vessel that has been fitted with a device that can bend time (fitting with recent theories on space travel). They find a ship that appears to be quite lifeless. Unfortunatly for them it isn't

As the other reviewer says if you slow down the log files you'll appreciate why this was rated so heavily, we didn't have that luxury in the cinema, but even at that time enough of the flickering images remain in the brain long enough to make you shudder, and they aren't the half of it.

A thoroughly taught blood and guts thriller, the like of which are rarely seen. Any criticisms? Well.. they did steal ideas from practically all the best horror movies ever made. Certainly comparisons to a sci-fi version of Hellraiser wouldn't be out of line.. But then why make it a criticism it was all done so exceptionally well!!

Not only do I rate this a 5 but I've rented it on both VHS and DVD twice. The only reason I haven't bought it is because of the lack of extras!

  • Could have been great....but isn't!

A good cast and storyline, starts well with a menacing chill but descends into predictable violent nonsense. A missed opportunity to create a sci-fi classic, instead an expensive B Movie consigned to the late night movie on TV that no one watches. Disappointing.

  • When in doubt add lots of blood. When desperate flood it with blood.

The film doesn't even try to go for any credibility in its plot. A experimental space ship that can bend time and space so as to bring two points close together in order circumvent less than light speed travel I can go along with. That the trip brought it into contact with 'Hell' and 'Chaos' in a place where normal physical laws do not apply only gives an excuse for grotesqueness and buckets of blood. They only went to Proxima Centurai which is in galactic terms on the doorstep which is a pretty lawful place as far as physics go. Its a science fiction without the science, its a horror movie stuck in a science fiction setting and a fantasy which isn't fantastic. When things flag even more blood is added until a whole deluge floods through the space ship for no apparent reason. You can feel the director's desperation. This film is not working and he knows it. The blood only makes it worse. The space ship interior is very impressive and the atmosphere aboard the space ship is very dark and threatening. Laurence Fishburne and Sam Neill managed to bring some credibility to their characters.

  • Great SciFi/Horror

SciFi/Horror as a genre can produce great cinema (Alien for instance) and Event Horizon is an interesting film as it attempts to introduce traditional evil into the story of a lost spacecraft that suddenly returns. It's a great little movie, quite scary and is a cut above the average. Well worth seeking out and giving a try.

This film is an interesting concept and an imaginative exploration of other-dimensional space. It certainly follows a similar pattern to Solaris in terms of the human element but includes a whole extra element of unknown with the inter-dimensional portal.

It was an engaging film and included a nice few twists and kept me guessing and Fishburne and Neill played their roles well.

That being said, a lot of the gore was fairly intense once it got going and, as far as my opinion goes, is only surpassed by Silence of the Lambs. I don't think of myself as being squeamish but I am very glad my wife did not watch it with me as she definitely would have found the gore over the top

absolute crap! Terrible acting/stupid plot/Second rate movie. Only watch if you really have nothing else to do. Shame really because Sam Neil is a half decent actor given the chance, but this wasnt one of those chances Im afraid!
