  • Highly entertaining - truly funny and thought provoking.

    [Highly rated reviewer]

A truly premium film! Maybe not quite as good as the original novel (a must read, laugh out loud, multi-stranded work of genius) but then very entertaining in its own right. They obviously had to cut a lot out for the film script, but the characters definitely come to life - particularly Alex and his grandfather.

It's definitely one of those 'how did I miss it the first time round' films - maybe not to everyone's taste, but if you enjoy quirky, leftfield films with great characters and enough mainstream appeal to keep everything in check (i.e. Little Miss Sunshine) then please rent this.

My recommendation - watch the film, enjoy and then read the book!

One of those 'not so sure' choices (I had to buy it in from the US) that gives you a great feeling once seen. Refreshing cast, playful nuances that keeps a smile on your face through most of the viewing and excellent music... Great.

  • World cinema at its best...

A very deep, world cinema movie. Worth watching. Serious movie with moving music soundtrack to accompany it.

A young man goes on a seach to find the woman who saved his grandfather during WW2. His search is based on a aged photograph handed to him by his dying grandmother. He has a compulsive family history interest and collects anything he can find as a visual family museum.

His travels take him to the his apparently reluctant guide, and old man and his grandson, who serves as a semi effectual translator. The movie is very unemotional and yet very emotional if you read between the lines of the subtitles.

One gets the impression through out the movie that there is little acting and much real life going on. These are real life people - living their actual lives and we are looking through the window of time...

    Very moving.

a beautifully observed and acted film

it starts off as a tender comedy and introduces us to the characters in a considered and gentle way before the story becomes darker and more poignant

The acting is great from all but the grandfather is excellent .The dog is pretty good too

Some lovely scenery thrown in to make it a film worth every minute of the time you spend watching it

This is the best film I've seen in such a long time. It was great from beginning to end. The acting was superb and the storyline was even better. A sad yet uplifting film, it's a unique combernation, and not easy to achieve.
