I understand that Excel Saga was a 'Quack Experimental Anime' with the intention of having no real plot and not making a lot of sense, but the series has taken a nose-dive with this disc. Whereas before we got a fairly decent storyline with a lot of potential, that's now gone out of the window to the point that characters start acting out of character or not appearing, schemes are cooked up for the sole reason of trying to be funny, and the fourth wall is broken down for no reason.
Had they stuck more closely to the manga, this would've been one of the greatest series to watch, and was for the last four discs - now however, it's not so much a series as poorly constructed non-humour. I will watch the last disc to see if it salvages anything, but my expectations have certainly been lowered.
Excel Saga has been an excellent series for the past 4 discs but disc 5 has proved to be a bit too much. One of the core concepts of this anime is that there is no real plot or direction for the series. This is not strictly true as the previous 4 episodes added new characters and story.
However, this disc is the poorest yet, any semblance of the plot has been removed and one particular episode where they replay all the Pedro scenes from earlier episodes is a wind up.
However, the episode with the singing is still good but I for one am glad this series is coming to an end before it does a Buck Rogers and ruins the memory of earlier episodes.
