Prying behind the façade of the respectable is director Atom Egoyan's stock-in-trade. In this pulsating study of need, isolation and fantasy, he effortlessly slips between past and present to create myriad plot strands that he finally ties together with a mastery few can match. It's hard to describe the plot of this movie. Its based around several characters and their unhealthy relationships. These characters are mostly obsessed with the object of their desire to the point of their own destruction. It's very slow paced and you never really get inside the heads of the characters. But I think thats the idea. Details are kept hidden, revealed slowly through careful editing. You're led to believe one thing and then shown another. Things make more sense the longer you watch. It really is well made and beautiful but it wasn't my kind of film. I was impressed, but not interested.
Likeable enough at first but eventually descends into a pointless plodding movie with an incoherent ending. I am baffled by the positive critical reviews.
