Director Walter Hill, initially revered for his unravelling of the male psyche and his lyrical expression of violence (à la Sam Peckinpah), has in recent years simply settled for violent action. Even though he is clearly in awe of Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch (which he can't hope to match), he does poke wry fun here at the central clichéd conflict between two old pals who each end up on opposite sides of the law. Hill is also aided by two actors who exude tough-guy behaviour with ease — Nick Nolte as the Texas Ranger and Powers Boothe as the chum-turned-drug lord.
"...Sensational....It is an exploitation picture but one with class: it has style...and thankfully, a dry, saving sense of humor..."
Nolte, at what he does best. Some good ass kicking moments in this classic 80's action movie.....plenty of violence, much better than the RUBBISH that keeps getting made these days.....
I saw this when it was first released back in 1987, and to be honest I couldn't really remember all that much about it, hence the reason for going back to it nearly 20 years later.
Nick nolte stars as a texas ranger trying to put to an end drug running across the border, but the dealer is an old childhood buddy, and who had previously been with Nolte's love interest. What we have is a modern day western and a great performance from Nick Nolte and Powers Booth. I certainly enjoyed this after 20 years, don't miss this if you are a fan of the stars of this movie or director Walter Hill.
