Director Walter Hill, initially revered for his unravelling of the male psyche and his lyrical expression of violence (à la Sam Peckinpah), has in recent years simply settled for violent action. Even though he is clearly in awe of Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch (which he can't hope to match), he does poke wry fun here at the central clichéd conflict between two old pals who each end up on opposite sides of the law. Hill is also aided by two actors who exude tough-guy behaviour with ease — Nick Nolte as the Texas Ranger and Powers Boothe as the chum-turned-drug lord.

    Classic ACTION

Nolte, at what he does best. Some good ass kicking moments in this classic 80's action movie.....plenty of violence, much better than the RUBBISH that keeps getting made these days.....

    An underated action classic.

I saw this when it was first released back in 1987, and to be honest I couldn't really remember all that much about it, hence the reason for going back to it nearly 20 years later.

Nick nolte stars as a texas ranger trying to put to an end drug running across the border, but the dealer is an old childhood buddy, and who had previously been with Nolte's love interest. What we have is a modern day western and a great performance from Nick Nolte and Powers Booth. I certainly enjoyed this after 20 years, don't miss this if you are a fan of the stars of this movie or director Walter Hill.

    Unexpected gem

In a conversation about parodies of Steven Seagull movies, myself and a friend suggested this as a title for one of his films. I looked it up and found that Extreme Prejudice did actually exist though, thankfully, not a Seagull effort.

Nick Nolte puts in a fine performance as the grizzled Texas Ranger who brings the local drug lord (Michael Ironside) to account. The same drug lord was once friends with Nolte's character before he 'went bad'.

Add to that, Clancy Brown, no less.

Anyway, fast paced and well played, I thought this was a great film. Far better than Steven Seagull could have come up with.

    A 'Wild Bunch' wannabe.

Not that trying to be Sam Peckinpah is a bad thing... This is a competent adventure movie with some great faces. Has some links to 'No Country for Old Men' as well as 'The Wild Bunch'.

If, like me, you think there aren't enough movies with Powers Boothe in them, then this is worth a punt.

    Extreme Violence

If you like your westerns with a twist, then this is worth a look! Although the dialogue is very corny, the actors all give it their best shot especially Nick Nolte. I liked the twist and turns of the double crossings and the always watchable Michael Ironside takes this above the normal type of western.

    different hill

Compared to likes of Driver, Southern Comfort or Last Man Standing this one seems less cartoonish. Nick Nolte and Powers Boothe play long time buddies now on the opposite side of the law. Fair amount of violence and Ry Cooder produces an electronic soundtrack. I guess Hil's approach didn't fit the 80s quite so well though at times it makes you think like it should have been his best film. Somewhat disappointing though I can't really tell why since the performances are excellent all round.

    Half decent, if muddled, western

This plays like the A-Team meets The Wild Bunch, and although I did enjoy this 80's modern-day western, I found that I didn't care too much about who lived or died.

That said, the shoot-outs are bloodily enjoyable, and totally silly, but are well worth a look as I found myself grinning from ear to ear.

See this if you liked Young Guns, The Wild Bunch or Last Man Standing.
