Most helpful review
A very memorable and exciting WWII spy drama.

This is a very good film indeed. Good storyline, fine acting, especially from Donald Sutherland as the ruthless German spy known as 'The Needle', exciting location and action, love interest in the form of Kate Nelligan who should have become a top star IMHO.
The opening scenes set the whole 'feel' of the picture------tense and interesting. Although the main action later takes place on a lonely Scottish isle, those opening scenes in England are a solid and suspenseful foundation.
Will Sutherland succeed as the ace super-spy or will he be thwarted? That is always the question. As the 'hero' ( or anti-hero?)of the film ( though a ruthless killer), he is our main interest and viewers find his skill and daring to be compelling, even though he is the 'enemy'------he's a bit like the Edward Fox role in that outstanding film of 'The Day Of The Jackal'.
This film is not in the same league as the super day Of The Jackal but it is nonetheless very memorable and an exciting spy thriller.
Highly recommended.- Was this review helpful to you?

Read the book!
By andymos (64 reviews) from worcestershire , 21 May 2011Another example of much missing from the book version. This film is 30 years old and looks it. The book is obviously older but doesn't.- Was this review helpful to you?

Very disappointing
By DonaldtheScot (5 reviews) from Edinburgh , 21 Jul 2009Having read the really excellent book by Ken Follett I was looking forward to this film. However the adaptation is extremely disappointing in every respect - poor characterisation, little in the way of suspense and large chunks of the plot either missed out or dealt with very poorly. My advice is to read the book instead - it really is good.- Was this review helpful to you?

A bit dated, but enjoyable
By Crookshanks (327 reviews) from Newport, Shropshire , 06 Apr 2009I read the book by Ken Follett before even knowing that this film exsisted, so it was great to finally see the story in action. I loved the whole style of the film. Even though it was filmed in the 80's it really did feel as though it was old film from the 1930/40's with clever use of dialogue and cinematography. Donald Sutherland was great as Faber (not quite as I imagined, but still good) They did cut quite a lot of the novel out of the film and focused more on Faber than on Godliman's story (which is equally interesting) but made for a faster paced movie. The ending, I felt, was cut a bit short but built up lots of tension (as in the book). A good classic movie worthy of a watch ........ but as usual the book is just miles better.- Was this review helpful to you?
