      Reminiscent of All the King's Men and On the Waterfront, this much overlong melodrama has compelling passages, but the star is not quite equal to it and parts are both repetitive and obscure.

    Thirty years ago, the first Rocky movie came out of nowhere like the urban fairytale it was. Sylvester Stallone was a bit part player, a big slab of meat with a crooked mouth who played purse-snatchers and mafia hoods.
