Excellent musicians at ease...
By a customer from Cupar , 26 Nov 2007[Highly rated reviewer]
The DVD features Fairport Convention live with Matthews Southern Comfort at the Maidstone Fiesta in the summer of 1970, hot on the heels of their 'Full House' album. This was one of those gigs which some argue are unrepeatable, and serves as a reminder to those who were part of the folk scene in those days just how things were! Even without founder Ashley Hutchings and the breathtaking vocals of Sandy Denny the band still show that they a force to be reckoned with. The picture and sound quality are not the best but when combined with the talents of director Tony Palmer the 'festival feel' is captured perfectly. John Peel provides a gentle commentary in his inimitable way.

(3)If only the cameraman......
By a customer from much birch , 06 Feb 2009I love Fairport and all thay stand for in the folk-rock world that they founded back in the late sixties. I was 16 when I saw this line-up at Birmingham town hall and the pang of wondrous memory that the film unleashed brought a tear to my eye. But, unfortunately it was made by Tony Palmer...and memories of the pop-films that he made during those years brought a different kind of tear to my eye. The cameraman only brought one lens with him that day and it was a close-up.....so pretty much the whole film is made up of portrait-shots of band members.........the only instrument in regular view being Swarb's fiddle cos he had to have the thing under his chin! The music is blistering and sound quality is pretty good with the digi-remix, but its all too short and it makes you relish such modern masterpieces as the Transatlantic sessions for quality of sound and symppathic visuals........This , unfortunately, was made by technicians who hadn't a clue about the music they were filming.
Saying that, its the only footage of the FULL HOUSE lineup that exists, apparently, so we have to be grateful and relish the wondrous memories of a classic Folk rock band in their prime.- Was this review helpful to you?

Classic era Fairport
By hamrag (14 reviews) from Carnforth , 05 Oct 2008A short film which includes footage of the 'Full House' era line-up of the band playing at a open air concert near Maidstone around 1970/71. The film also contains a couple of numbers played by Matthews Southern Comfort (the lead singer, Ian Matthews, was in an earlier line-up of Fairport Convention).
Some great performances from Fairport, while the MSC ones are not quite as inspired. The film is only about 35/40 minutes long, so maybe better to rent this one rather than buy it as you don't get a lot of film for your money. Were there no out-takes? Maybe not.
There is a short interview with the director Tony Palmer which fleshes out the disc to about an hours playing time- Was this review helpful to you?
