The day that Kate (Kerry Fox) finishes her first novel, her doctor tells her that her childbearing years are almost over. Distraught, she goes to see her husband Rob, but on the way crashes her VW into a Jaguar owned by Dave (Ray Winstone). At the scene of the accident, the two have a massive row, then storm in to a pub to meet their respective partners - only to discover that their partners are having an affair!
Kate, now with no husband to get her pregnant, is devastated. Dave's wife kicks him out of his house to make room for Rob. Desperate, he persuades Kate to allow him stay in her spare room until the car repair bill is paid off. Since making her mark with TV's Band of Gold, writer Kay Mellor has shown a decidedly soft centre in her film work. Following the maudlin Girls' Night, which she wrote, she makes her directorial debut with this soppy second-chance romance, in which a budding Barbara Cartland finds millennial love with a much-married car dealer. Were it not for the knowing performances of Kerry Fox and Ray Winstone, the stodginess of Mellor's staging and the laziness of her script would be all the more apparent. However, from the screaming match that marks their first encounter to the umpteenth breakdown in communication, they just about keep things bubbling.
