The day that Kate (Kerry Fox) finishes her first novel, her doctor tells her that her childbearing years are almost over. Distraught, she goes to see her husband Rob, but on the way crashes her VW into a Jaguar owned by Dave (Ray Winstone). At the scene of the accident, the two have a massive row, then storm in to a pub to meet their respective partners - only to discover that their partners are having an affair!
Kate, now with no husband to get her pregnant, is devastated. Dave's wife kicks him out of his house to make room for Rob. Desperate, he persuades Kate to allow him stay in her spare room until the car repair bill is paid off. As she navigates through the murky world of dating looking for a potential father for her child, she's surprised by the thoughts of Dave continually enter her head!
