  • Not anywhere as good as the original!

The original Fantasia has always been one of my favorite movies, so I was very excited when Disney decided to release a new 'using modern animation techniques' Fantasia. I found this version rather boring, lacking in excitement, and very tedious in parts. It still had some fun parts, but nothing near the excitement (and I went back to rewatch the original, to see if something had changed in my age makeup) as the original. A poor job by Disney.

I've watched both this and the original, and I like them both. The animation is first rate, and I really enjoyed the musical pieces. I liked that each segment had it's own style of animation. My favorite is Rhapsody in Blue, following the fortunes of 4 New Yorkers, and Pines of Rome, showing what whales get up to when no ones watching. The Stedfast Tin Soldier was enjoyable, though I wish Disney would stop relying on CGI, when the artists are clearly talented without the use of computers. The flamingo sequence was fun too. Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I find watching it stragely comforting.

I write really just to divert members to the original Fantasia (1940) which is better by miles, and with some most artistic, even revolutionary animation that far surpasses modern CGI, classic animation was more of an human effort, a craft. This version was the two-dimensional one, and mostly soporific, in my experience.
