Most helpful review Fantasia

  • Fantasia shows its age

When I saw Fantasia as a child it was the most awe inspiring experience I had. Now it is still a lovely film with superb animation, but it suffers in comparison with current special effects and animation/live films. This is expected of course, but still a disappointment. Mickey is still wonderful in the Sorcerer's Apprentice but much of the rest has not aged well, especially the commentary and views of conductor Stakowski.

  • Timeless classic or complete trash?

When Fantasia was first released it bombed at the box office. To me, that's no surprise. It's not a Disney Disney film if you get me. There are no princesses or villains as such. Instead there are animations with rarely no narrative that have been put to classic and sometimes original pieces of music. To a 10 year old, this film would be absolute rubbish. It's not really a film where you could get the family together to watch. However, there are pieces of the film which have now become respected and grown to cult like status, that of the Sorcerer's Apprentice. I had seen this is my youth but couldn't quite remember what it was like. I'm sure when I was 10 years old I thought this was rubbish. But now as I'm older I can appreciate the work that's gone into it. Yes this film does show it's age, it's from 1940 what can you expect? You'd have to look at it in a way such as, 'wow, they did this in 1940 and it's still here.' This film is a staple in animation and rightly so. If you are looking for a film where you can get the popcorn out and get cosy, this is not one of those films. This is edgy before its time, more suited to a stoner than a cinema audience. It is worth a watch if you appreciate the work and the fact that this is a timeless classic.

Fantasia is a serious film buff’s dream, a game-changing animation. It is not entertaining for two full hours, more sporadically brilliant.
