Departing from his usual preoccupations and locales, André Téchiné explores the plight of the would-be immigrant in this credible, but unfocused drama. Employing a digi-video style for added immediacy, he concentrates on the human drama rather than dwelling on its socio-political considerations, while bringing unbearable tension to the drug smuggling and money laundering sequences. Yet, a surfeit of subplots distracts from the central premise, which sees trucker Stéphane Rideau promise to smuggle Mohamed Hamaidi from Tangiers to Spain if he can effect a reconciliation with Rideau's estranged girlfriend, Lubna Azabal, a Jew whose wealthy brother wants her to emigrate to Canada.
A change of pace for Cruise and Kidman, after the dismal Days of Thunder, with this old-fashioned period romance. In... read more on Time Out
Watched this ages ago but only recently on dvd. What can I say-good good film. Nicole is believable. Tom is not bad-the accents in my opinon are good. The plot is a typical epic romantic historical film-as dad puts it 'its Titanic if the iceberg hadn't hit'
Give this film a try-its worth it. The scenery in Ireland is well shot and the soundtrack fits the scenes and story in a complimentary way.
No complaints-at all. Good film-if you enjoyed films like Titanic, Ned Kelly and gritty westerns-then give this a try as it combines the best elements of these films.
This is not my idea of fun or entertainment. You have two very talented actors, well 1?(he?s not very big) Nicole Kidman who is this sexiest woman on this planet, and then there?s Tom, who should stick to playing Americans(which he is).
This film just didn?t do it for me, I was bored right the way through the film and didn?t see anything about this film that I liked(except Nicole).
The story line has a lot of promise, but needs a different type of male actor to play it, not some 5ft 7in American, playing a Irish prize fighter.
Sir Sean Connery's Irish-American accent in 1987 film The Untouchables has been voted the worst of all time in a new poll. The former James Bond star played a cop in the hit movie and received an Academy Award for his turn - despite failing to lose his native Scottish dialect. Connery's role saw off competition from Kevin Costner's portrayal of the English folk hero in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, with his American accent landing him second place in the survey by a U.S. ticket agency.
