Departing from his usual preoccupations and locales, André Téchiné explores the plight of the would-be immigrant in this credible, but unfocused drama. Employing a digi-video style for added immediacy, he concentrates on the human drama rather than dwelling on its socio-political considerations, while bringing unbearable tension to the drug smuggling and money laundering sequences. Yet, a surfeit of subplots distracts from the central premise, which sees trucker Stéphane Rideau promise to smuggle Mohamed Hamaidi from Tangiers to Spain if he can effect a reconciliation with Rideau's estranged girlfriend, Lubna Azabal, a Jew whose wealthy brother wants her to emigrate to Canada.

Is it a Film you're looking for Joseph?

Watched this ages ago but only recently on dvd. What can I say-good good film. Nicole is believable. Tom is not bad-the accents in my opinon are good. The plot is a typical epic romantic historical film-as dad puts it 'its Titanic if the iceberg hadn't hit'

Give this film a try-its worth it. The scenery in Ireland is well shot and the soundtrack fits the scenes and story in a complimentary way.

No complaints-at all. Good film-if you enjoyed films like Titanic, Ned Kelly and gritty westerns-then give this a try as it combines the best elements of these films.

    zzzzzz. Has it finished yet

This is not my idea of fun or entertainment. You have two very talented actors, well 1?(he?s not very big) Nicole Kidman who is this sexiest woman on this planet, and then there?s Tom, who should stick to playing Americans(which he is).

This film just didn?t do it for me, I was bored right the way through the film and didn?t see anything about this film that I liked(except Nicole).

The story line has a lot of promise, but needs a different type of male actor to play it, not some 5ft 7in American, playing a Irish prize fighter.

I couldn't even get it working

As an adult for 11 years, I didn't consider that a DVD may have parental controls. This one does! I have seen this film many times before and I do think it is a great film, but someone at Universal needs their butt kicking after making it so difficult to watch this DVD.

    Excellent film

Brilliant casting between Tom and Nicole.

Brilliant story - I love the mix of posh girl and lower class boy.

All in all a brill film - some bad language but watchable with teens.

    Would see again anytime.

    Worlds apart

A story about love and adventure. Shannon an upperclass Irish girl falls for a poor 'bog boy', Joseph. They travel from Ireland to America to follow their dreams of love and land. A heart-warming romance story starring Hollywood's greatests.

An excellent heart-warming story.Spectacular acting from Tom Cruise and the delicious Nicole Kidman. Warmly sentimental

Not a bad film overall. Worth getting out if there isn't any blockbusters on your list. Good performances by the husband and wife team. Plot drags on a little but entertaining none the less.

    Not great

The early part of this set in Ireland was OK (if you can forgive Cruise his Irish accent) but it just didn't keep my attentinon as the movie progressed - the love story didn't have any 'vibe'.

    One worth watching

I liked this one. Having seen it a long while ago, I thought it would be worth watching again. It's comical, adventurous with a bit of romance thrown in - good all-rounder.
