    [Highly rated reviewer]

This faithful adaptation of Hardy's masterpiece boasts stunning performances (especially of Farmer Oak) and the drama thrilled me throughout. The action is rather slow to begin yet accelerates towards a most magnificent conclusion which (I am not ashamed to admit) brought a few tears to my eyes. Creepy Mr.Boldwood sends genuine chills down my back and Sgt.Troy's cassanova-esque lines are aptly cheesy. If you like period romance with captivating twists, this film will definately not dissapoint. Beats Austen anyday!

Quote of the film: 'You may have it again if you like.' (Bathesheba)

I had recently seen the 1960s adaptation with Julie Christie and had somehow ordered this version by mistake. Nearly sent it back without watching it and very glad I didn't.

Paloma Baeza is fantastic as Bathsheba. She looks like a country girl and gives an emotionally restrained performance that is perfect for the character. I really cared about her as I did when I read the novel.

There is a real sense of a remote rural farm and the minor characters add richness and authenticity. It's a long film but that gives the time needed for the story to unfold and to add the details that make this film a real joy to watch.

    Highly recommend.

Julie Christie could never convince as Bathsheba Everdene.

The unknown (to me, at least) in this film convinces.

    A good 'un, this.
