The success of Animal House spawned a spate of dreadful teen sex comedies best typified by the crass Porky's series. However, Amy Heckerling's insightful, sympathetic and still very funny foray into high school life was a stunning exception. Thoughtfully adapted by Cameron (Jerry Maguire) Crowe from his own novel, on the surface it's just another episodic story of high school students trying to lose their virginity — except this also chronicles serious issues such as teenage pregnancy along with the usual hi-jinks. Moving and frequently hilarious this comedy/drama still stands as one of the most influential 80s teen movies, dealing with serious topics such as drugs, sex and pregnancy while still maintaining a healthy sense of humour. The cast list reads like a who's who of washed-out C-list actors and actresses, but Judge Reinhold, Jennifer Jason Lee, Pheobe Cates and the rest put in some strong performances. Sean Penn is especially outstanding, stealing every scene he's in thanks to his spot-on portrayal of Jeff Spicoli, a typical surfer dude who has some of the funniest moments and serves as a template for stoned teenagers in every film that followed.
Perfect for anybody who enjoyed Clueless, Ten Things I Hate About You or The Breakfast Club.

Every generation deserves its own too-cool-for-school teen movie. For some of us it was Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Others had Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Heathers, or Dazed and Confused, or Human Traffic… They may not seem cool to older folk, but what do the young care about that? Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist sets out to be such a film. It relates a night in the life of two teen misfits. Nick (a typically decent and befuddled Michael Cera) might be cool - he’s...
