Without Fast Times... there would be no American PieBy a customer from South Coast, England , 23 Oct 2003
[Highly rated reviewer]Moving and frequently hilarious this comedy/drama still stands as one of the most influential 80s teen movies, dealing with serious topics such as drugs, sex and pregnancy while still maintaining a healthy sense of humour. The cast list reads like a who's who of washed-out C-list actors and actresses, but Judge Reinhold, Jennifer Jason Lee, Pheobe Cates and the rest put in some strong performances. Sean Penn is especially outstanding, stealing every scene he's in thanks to his spot-on portrayal of Jeff Spicoli, a typical surfer dude who has some of the funniest moments and serves as a template for stoned teenagers in every film that followed.
Perfect for anybody who enjoyed Clueless, Ten Things I Hate About You or The Breakfast Club.

classic early 80's feel good film.By fastforwardfan (51 reviews) , 30 Nov 2013Funny teen comedy film which has some good performances by the main characters, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Phoebe Cates, Judge Reinhold, and of course Sean Penn as stoned surfer dude. At the time (1982) it was quite risqué as it covers a lot of teenage issues although it is quite tame now. The standout scene is the one with Cates in the red bikini! Apparently Penn's use of the word 'dude' established it in main stream pop culture. It doesn't really have a strong story line its just about a group of kids at school, and there are no gross-out moments but that makes it all the better.
Review by ex-surferBy a customer , 18 Mar 2013Fast Times At Ridgemont High is pretty funny -- Sean Penn is very good. I grew up in Southern California and was around the surfer culture, so my view of what's funny may not match what people from other cultures think is funny. I don't think Fast Times is in the same league as Raising Arizona or Animal House. However, Sean Penn's performance does compare favorably with Cheech & Chong's doper humor, in my view.
A classic filmBy netreg (35 reviews) from Chelmsford , 27 Mar 2012One of those films that takes you right back to your younger days... A classic by any standard. Sean Penn's character is hilarious...
oh yeah! not for kids though!!!
Don't Get The HypeBy 1mper1um (52 reviews) , 09 Mar 2012Unless we're talking about Phoebe Cates (who I've always had a crush on). Seminak film set in the early 80s, final-year-of-school zone. Follows the trials and tribulations as kids make the leap to adulthood and learn life lessons and make mistakes along the way.
I understand it's revered, I just don't get it myself. Certainly it doesn't hold up. And as a lover of all things 80s, it's not as if I'm judging it by 2012's standards.
Quite good early 80s High School comedyBy Carp37 (54 reviews) from Sheffield , 06 Oct 2010By no means a laugh a minute, this early 80s comedy/dramedy has nevertheless just about withstood the test of time. Written by Cameron Crowe, and featuring a stellar cast (Phoebe Cates, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold, plus an extremely irritating Sean Penn), it's worth a watch- just. The film doesn't have any of the easy going charm of John Hughes movies, but neither is it as in your face as Animal House, Porky's etc.
