Panned on its original release, this spoof thriller boasts some slick gags and several knowing performances. The problem is, it's often far too clever for its own good. Veteran director Carl Reiner has got the look and feel of latter-day films noir off to a T, and sets about such movies as Fatal Attraction, Basic Instinct, Body Heat and Sleeping with the Enemy with evident relish. He's well served by Armand Assante as a cop who doubles as a lawyer for the people he arrests, Kate Nelligan as his blatantly adulterous wife, and Sherilyn Fenn and Sean Young as his femmes fatales.
Clumsy farce that attempts to parody film noir and such modern thrillers as Fatal Attraction, Basic Instinct and Body Heat; about one joke in twenty raises a hint of a smile.
It's rare for me not to see a movie through to its end. I managed about 20 minutes of Fatal Instinct before switching it off. It tries hard to be a send up of a detective thriller, with a little 'Body Heat' thrown into the mix. It is totally lacking in originality, subtlety or intelligence. A movie to be avoided.
It trys to be like Naked Gun or Airplane however it just can't do it.
The jokes are few and far between and painfully contrived when they do appear. Very disappointing for a big Carl Reiner fan.
