Based on the erotic horror comic strip by David Quinn and Tim Vigil, Re-Animator producer/director Brian Yuzna's shocker is an appallingly bad devil-in-disguise version of The Crow. Shattered after the murder of his girlfriend by a criminally demonic sect called The Hand, John Jaspers (Mark Frost) signs away his soul to the Devil in return for vengeance on her killers. But the satanic pact also means he's transformed into a sick superhero, armed with long metal claws, who must play a vital part in a prophesied black magic ritual. Nothing works in Yuzna's crudely assembled dud, unless you're a fan of a hopelessly amateur jumble of comic bubble clichés, terrible special effects and blaring heavy metal music.
I thought this film was great! The storyline is good and there is plenty of gore. The film is about a guy who sells his soul to get vengeance on the people who murdered his girlfriend and ends up being used as a tool of murder for a satanic cult leader. It starts of quite seriously and turns into a fun comic book style gory, violent and fun 30 mins to the end. It is similar to SPAWN but check out THE CROW for a more serious and moody take on a similar type of story.
What a disappointment. As a Brian Yuzna film I was expecting Faust to be a silly, gory but ultimately fun adult superhero flick, when all I got was a silly, gory, mess.
Faust, a superhero whos been cut & pasted from X-Mens Wolverine and MacFarlanes Spawn, is a fairly unlikeable character, who has neither the depth to make us feel for his apparent tortured soul, or the whit to make him an likeable anti-hero. The story is your usual mish-mash of Devil taking over the world with ex-puppet turned superhero and love interest the only thing standing in the way yawn, unoriginal and lacking depth.
The action and gore scenes are what disappoint the most however, Yuzna cant seem to direct exciting action sequences so compensates with over the top, silly looking gore effects and a heavy metal soundtrack bleating on over the background. In the wake of movie like Blade the action here seems slightly mechanical, with no fluency to the actors moves.
The gore effects can range from Not bad to terrible, while the acting and script seemed to have been an afterthought to showing lots of blood on screen. Andrew Divoff as the main baddie M is great though, and is the only thing keeping this miserable mess afloat. A shame his talents are being wasted on B-Movies like this though.
Action/Superhero/Horror fans will only find disappointment here, this is one to avoid.
