Spruced-up Classic

Beautifuly restored. it's fascinating to see legendary performers like Emil Jannings and Yvette Guilbert (who was,in her heyday, drawn several times by Toulouse Lautrec-)do their thing.
The demonic stuff is simple, but visually impressive, even today. People must have been quite unsettled by images like this back in the 20's.
It has to be said that the 'Gretchen' love story drags on somewhat, but it's still something every film lover should see. There are 'extras', but my dvd wouldn't let me get the commentary, which was a real drag.- Was this review helpful to you?

(13)A Wickedly Good Film
By Seedyvee (182 reviews) from Grantham , 03 Apr 2011Although desperate to find the cure for a plague epidemic, Faust is tricked by the devil into giving his soul for the pursuit of former youthhood which has tragic outcomes for third parties. The monochromaticism and special camera effects well evoke a medieval era and the film has atmosphere and a strong inexorable plot. The facial expressions are most theatricaly done but can be readily accepted in this genre without detriment to the sincerity of the storyline. A great film, powerful and intense.- Was this review helpful to you?

bad boy
By angdavies (52 reviews) from Bruton , 27 Oct 2009Credit: impressive special effects, not only for early cinema, but also some brooding scenes still leave a strong impact. Obviously hammy considering the vintage, but effective acting especially from the chap who plays Mephisto. In most poignant section involves the destruction of a chaste and virtuous virgin, picked on for the devious evils of Mephisto and his hapless and charmless Faust. Almost brings a tear to an eye.
Debit: Faust is played rather too weakly for the lascivious central role. He doesn't hold the attention as a man allowed to revel in all the libertine and foul vices that the devil has put before him. Without proper depiction of debauch, I wasnt particularly convinced by his corruption.
Overall: historically interesting, and apart from a few unnecessary bits of slapstick, well worth the time.- Was this review helpful to you?

enjoyable film
By stuntmanbob (51 reviews) from diss , 07 Oct 2008I didn`t think I was going to enjoy it at first but I quickly got into it. Having read Goethe`s version I must say that the film seemed to make more sense, though it`s a shame they didn`t include more of the 'Aurebachs Keller' scene, which is a great chapter in the book.
I loved the actor (sorry can`t remember his name) who played the Devil. He was terrific!- Was this review helpful to you?
