Spruced-up Classic

Beautifuly restored. it's fascinating to see legendary performers like Emil Jannings and Yvette Guilbert (who was,in her heyday,drawn several times by Toulouse Lautrec-)do their thing.

The demonic stuff is simple, but visually impressive, even today. People must have been quite unsettled by images like this back in the 20's.

It has to be said that the 'Gretchen' love story drags on somewhat, but it's still something every film lover should see. There are 'extras', but my dvd wouldn't let me get the commentary, which was a real drag.
