A most brilliant tale of family tragedy and revenge. As the patriarch of a rich Danish family celebrates a big birthday, his son salutes his father in a toast like you have never heard before. A more stunning piece of writing, directing and acting you will not find. Dogma or no dogma, pictures and sound play a minor role in this brutal timeless drama.

Two wasted hours of my life. Pointless story about a dysfunctional family. Wondering how it appeared on my wach list.

An uncomfortable but thought provoking drama which unearths old secrets behind the social facade and chilling correctness surrounding an wealthy Danish family and their friends and relations.

  • When Good Times Turn Very Very Bad

Festen (aka 'The Celebration') is a tense, taut drama that pivots upon a publicly made revelation that turns the film on its head. The celebration in question is the lavish 60th birthday party of the head of a well-to-do family. The relationships of the different family members are believable and the storyline gripping. The no frills 'Dogme' style of the film (no artificial lighting, each scene being shot without changes of viewpoint or post-shoot editing) arguably lends it greater realism - it's as though you're watching real events in real time.

  • Very compelling on the whole

Man has 60th Birthday, all family and friends come to celebrate like they do every 10 years, Man’s offspring’s have issues, a right hullabaloo.

Brilliant Danish film that may seem a bit arty at times in the way that it’s shot but some brilliant acting, heavy story line and very compelling on the whole.

A wide cast of characters portraying an allegedly happy family with some deep, dark secrets which are slowly revealed as the film progresses coupled with interesting sub plots throughout.

The cinematography can be a bit off putting especially in the darker scenes but I thought it worked well and gave a more personal account of the characters.

A very tense and disturbing drama centred around a family gathering. A frightening scenario, brilliantly acted & thought provoking script.
