Fidel Castro led the revolution that overthrew President Batista's military regime in Cuba in 1959 and was sworn in as Prime Minister shortly afterwards. Over the ensuing 48 years he has become one of the most iconic leaders on the world stage, regardes as a dictator by his opponents and as a liberator by his supporters.
This documentary examines the life of the charismatic leader, from his early days as a college student to leading the first, albeit unsuccessful attempt to overthrow Batista in 1953 and his eventual imprisonment. There is the involvement of Che Guevara in the revolution and his eventual conflicting relationships with near neighbour the United States and reliance on the Soviet Union.
Fidel Castro has outlived all of his protagonists, making his story one of the most important and diverse of all political leaders of the 20th and 21st centuries. This is the untold story.

About time there was a documentary which actually recognises, and celebrates the achievements of a great man. One of the very few to stand up to the US and it's imperial ambitions, and a hero to much of the third world. This documentary actually dares to show Castro as a popular figure, among his own people and many others. If the US is to be believed, this old man in his military fatigues is the devil incarnate. If the devil is capable of producing 100% literacy, zero homelessnes, a fantastic education system and a health service which means Cubans live longer than Americans, where do I sign. All of this in a tiny impoverished nation that has been bullied almost to the point of starvation by the Americans, all in the name of democracy. Viva Fidel! Viva la revolucion!
A very interesting programme, not too long or boring to the viewer. The two major incidents in the sixties are not covered that much which is a pity. All in all a good watch.
