This fantasy drama from director Phil Alden Robinson is a delightful blend of the blind-fate story and the more fanciful feel-good corn of Frank Capra. Kevin Costner, as an Iowan farmer, is the epitome of dignified determination as he accedes to a ghostly voice and turns the field on which the family depends for its livelihood into a baseball pitch. The underestimated Amy Madigan gives a good account of herself as his trusting wife, while Ray Liotta, Burt Lancaster and Frank Whaley represent the spirit world with distinction.
"...A work so smartly written, so beautifully filmed, so perfectly acted, that it does the almost impossible trick of turning sentimentality into true emotion..."
I'm also an average man who, like the majority of his male friends and colleagues, aren't into crying at films (although a few who have seen it now no longer deny it!). This film turns me into a blubbering mess every time. I'm not a baseball fan, but then this film isn't really about baseball. It's about people and the things we regret in our past. It's definitely a 'man film' (my wife doesn't get it either) but not in the usual way. It's not sad and depressing. There are some very funny parts, especially involving James Earl Jones, but it just seems to touch something inside men that no other film I've seen can. If you think it's not manly to cry in front of people then watch it on your own, but you must watch it.
Kevis Costner is possibly at his (very confused and haunted by ghosts) best in this predictable yet surprising drama. It's slightly predictable and sometimes a little creepy but it's change of pace and location, along with a sweet (although a little sad) conclusion make this a good film to watch on a sunday afternoon.
Tt won't go down in the 'Baseball Film Hall Of Fame' and focuses more on the players than the game itself but who doesn't love a film about a farmer who risks everything he's got (including his family) to build a baseball pitch in his field for a bunch of dead ball players becaue a mysterious voice told him to? And it doesn't really become clear who 'He' (as in 'If you build it 'he' will come) is until near the end. it's a nice twist. and a good film.
The couple who own the site Kevin Costner's character called home in baseball film Field Of Dreams have abandoned plans to stage a celebration to mark the 20th anniversary of the film. Donald and Becky Lansing claim the economic crisis is to blame for their decision to call off the event, which they were planning in northern Iowa this spring (09). They tell the Associated Press that it made no sense to spend money on such an event when so many local people are losing their jobs. Instead, the... Read more
