Rocky meets Bruce Lee... knuckle-shredding biopic.
I have just watched this film, not realizing, until hearing the characters name that this was based on a true story. It tells the story of the late Masatatsu Oyama. (The founder of Korea's Kyukushin-kai Karate). Oyama earned his reputation as a Karate master that tested his powers by taking fights to all the Japanese masters and beating them all. When he couldn't find any more opponents, he then went on proving his powers by fighting and breaking the horns off of 52 bulls. He became a hero through out Japan. His style of karate is well known in the martial arts world for its knock down full contact karate tournaments, and destruction breaking trials. One of his philosophies was "A karateka with no breaking power, is like an apple tree that bears no friut". Former students of his style include film star Dolph Lundgren.
This is a film not to be missed. The fight scenes are brilliant, and what makes it all the more incredible is the fact that the events depicted in the film actually happened. If youre a martial arts fan, don't miss this film, even though it is in sub titles.
I must have been in an emotional state when I watched this film as it really created an impact and left me speechless. Visually exciting with some stunning martial arts choreography. This film had history entwined with a mixture of romance, revenge, pure martial arts action and an interesting look at the racism Korean's had to face from the Japanese.
The action sequences were breathtaking and whilst the movie doesnt have the fighting energy of Ong Bak the lead actor has truly mastered his art and also has the ability to act. If you love martial arts but also can handle a little more story and sensitivity I would whole heartedly recommend this film. I would be disappointed if anyone hated it but I hope at least if you read this review I can encourage you to watch it. Enjoy...
