This film is a must for any fans of anime or the original Final Fantasy VII game.
With probably the most impressive computer animation ever seen, this film puts any of the recent attempts by animation giants Pixar to shame.
The plot will be confusing to anyone who has never played the game before but there is a handy extra included on the DVD which takes you on a journey through the significant events in the game (albeit a very short and simplified journey) but if you're a fan of quality animation this shouldn't put you off too much.
Finally do not confuse this film with the awful Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within as despite being produced by the same company (Square) and sharing almost equally impressive animation its plot is so awful you will not want to watch it to the end.
Okay as many other reviewers have stated this is a beautiful piece of animation I mean really, really, really beautiful I cna count on on ehand the work I've seen that's nicer, but what the hells going on?
It's like it was edited with a chainsaw and a magi mix, the timeline sall over the shop characters just randomly turn up for set piece battles no indication of how or why they are tthere .
The plot is even more convoluted and weird than the Spirits With in Movie (which I quite liked but I prefare Nausica of the Valley of Wind fo ra broadly similar themed story.)
It probably makes more sense if oyu'v eplayed the game there is a run through in the extras of the game but
a) I didn't watch that till after the movie
b) I found it nonsensicle and dull
c) It was difficult to figure out who was whom given the massive change in animation style
I gave up on the game thing before the end I didn't feel it was expanding my understanding just giving me new levels of confusion
Overall I think with Spirits within it will stand as an important achievement in animation and as i've staed it's undeniably beautiful to look at but just didn't hang togethe rwell enough for me
