Finding Forrester

Director Gus Van Sant brings to the screen this moving story of a grizzled recluse and an inner-city teenager brought together by their shared passion for writing. Like Van Sant's Oscar-nominated GOOD WILL HUNTING, FINDING FORRESTER earnestly explores the struggles of a youthful genius whose position in society (underprivileged kid from the wrong side of the tracks) makes him seem destined for failure until he forms a relationship with a gifted but introverted mentor who helps him see the light. The youthful genius is a talented urban basketball player named Jamal Wallace (Rob Brown), who in his spare time reads everything he can get his hands on, secretly scribbling prose and poetry into a composition pad. The introverted mentor is William Forrester (Sean Connery), who took the literary world by storm with his debut novel, AVALON RISING, 50 years earlier but now spends whole days shut inside his Bronx apartment looking out the window onto a basketball court where Jamal hangs out. Buoyed by excellent performances from Connery and newcomer Brown, FINDING FORRESTER paints a compelling, alluring portrait of friendship while offering intriguing insights into the heart and soul of the dedicated writer.

After teaming up with Catherine Zeta-Jones in Entrapment, Sean Connery took on an even more youthful co-star in this Gus Van Sant-directed drama about literary aspirations. Connery (who also co-produced) plays William Forrester, an elderly, reclusive writer, a JD Salinger-like figure seemingly crippled by the success of his first novel. Living in the Bronx he befriends black teenager Jamal (impressively played by newcomer Robert Brown), a basketball ace with a brilliant literary streak who's forced to downplay his intelligence. An unlikely friendship grows, as Forrester recognises and nurtures this talent — despite opposition from F Murray Abraham's malicious professor. Of course, there are similarities to Van Sant's earlier Good Will Hunting — a gifted youth encouraged by an older mentor — but this film has a mood and tempo that transcend manipulated cosiness. It's an astute choice of role for Connery, who belies his advancing years with an outstanding and vigorous portrayal of the blocked writer.

    Good Plot -Well Acted

Perhaps a bit predictable, but it was an enjoyable watch - suitable for the younger viewer as well as older adults... Looks at race, priviledge, confidentiality, honesty, and the struggle of one lad to rise above the expectations that society places on him.

Sean Penn as you’ve never seen him before! Certainly one of the actors of his generation, Penn gets in touch with his feminine side in Gus Van Sant’s powerful, moving biopic about the activist and San Francisco city supervisor Harvey Milk. Milk was the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California, but was murdered soon afterwards. (No spoiler here – the movie gives us the outcome in the opening minutes.) An audiotape Milk records “just in case” Read more
