Most helpful review Fingersmith

  • Ultimately, a satisfying film

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Having read the book, I found the first third of the film rather disappointing. I always try to judge an adaptation on its own merit. However, the film raced ahead, action-packed for the first hour, without ever establishing the characters fully. Key features were glossed over (the fingersmith business, pornographic book collection, characters of Mrs Sucksby, Gentleman et al and the build up to the first lesbian encounter) leaving the remainder of the film to pick up the pieces.

Later in the film come the many twists and turns, which make for compelling viewing and many surprises. This is a great story and all the threads are pulled together toward the end. Ultimately, it's satisfying, complete and thought-provoking, but a shame about the start.

Period drama set in 19th century. BBC series. An unusual and original plot with more twists than a game of pontoon. Very good acting and casting, It is long (180 mins) but is well worth the effort. It gets better and more intriguing as it progresses. There is a lesbian relationship tastefully and credibly done. A very good drama of betrayal, love , greed, wealth, poverty, and a gigantic scam. This film has it all. I was surprised that I was not aware of this when it was on TV.

I hadn't read the book so I didn't know what to expect but I thought it was excellent. Good story and good acting. A fantastic piece of writing by Sarah Waters.

  • A Great Period Drama

I haven't read any Sarah Water's books but she must be a great novelist if this movie is anything to go on. I found that 'Fingersmith' was captivating viewing as the settings and costumes were more than believable and the story kept my attention throughout.

All credit must go to both Elaine Cassidy and Sally Hawkins for acting out what must have been difficult parts, but having said that, they were supported by a great cast with Imelda Staunton been singled out for special praise.

With a film that is well acted out and a great story, I can only find myself recommending it. Great viewing.
