Dawson's Creek star Katie Holmes has struggled to translate her TV popularity to the big screen and this tepid romantic comedy doesn't look like changing things. She plays the dutiful daughter of the US president (Michael Keaton), but is looking forward to asserting her independence when she heads off to college. The ever-present secret service and tabloid reporters make life difficult, but things start to look up when she falls for fellow student Marc Blucas. However, he may not be all that he seems. The direction here by Forest Whitaker (who also narrates) is proficient enough, but what starts off as a fairy-tale romp gets drearily serious midway through. A touch of Animal House-style tastelessness would have made this a lot more fun.

This film is really good. I wasn,t expecting much but it was brilliant. Basically its about a young girl trying to lead a normal life but there's just one thing getting in the way. She's the presidents daughter. She has security everywhere she goes. Check out the table dancing scene I was laughing for ages at that. Anyway watch it if you want to laugh and nearly cry at parts. But the ending is one of those 'well what happened to her then' ones its the only downfall.
One to watch with girls.
Too much of a chick flick for my husband.
Three and a half stars
not bad you will like this film if nothing else is on tv on sunday afternoon.

This is a kids film and I'm not even sure if they'd like it either - it was easily in my top 10 most boring films EVER!
i wasn't sure about this as it had been given no pr and nothing was said about it.
so i decided to take a chance and rent it, and i was glad i did. for i discovered that two great leads and it suited them as well, so i say if you believe in romance then this is your film
I loved this film, first class performance from Katie - much better than some of the other films she has been dragged into! Lets hope Tom can give her some pointers on this ;-) But yes loved the film, though it was done very well, I was surprised by the 'twist' and hadn't worked it out before it happened, so it kept me guessing :-) 10 out of 10!!
First Daughter was no epic or directing masterpiece but both my wife and I really enjoyed it, a romantic comedy based around the trials of your average daughter of the president. The film follows the presidents daughter, Sam, played by Katie Holmes as she struggles to gain her independence and start a normal college life, easier said than done when everything you do is covered by the media not to mention her secret service following. Sam goes through a series of often humorous events as she makes friends, losses them, rebels against her family and of course falls in love! The film has plenty of cheesy smiles, a few laughs and makes an enjoyed watch. Michael Keaton is enjoyable as the president as the film also follows how Sams actions can affect his presidential campaign. If this is your genre of film you will enjoy, if not then First Daughter is not at all painful and worth a watch. Between 3 and 4 stars.
As a definite step-up from the choice of movies on TV it was reasonably entertaining while ironing on a wet and windy afternoon.
Wish I could like Katie Holmes, but her particular brand of pretend guache naivety and almost permanent lop-sided smile, destroys any acting ability she may, or may not, have.
As for Marc Blucas, the mistake might have been giving him dialogue. The silent agent had more charisma.
Watch this, as long as you've got something else to engage your interest!
Romantic comedy with the emphisis on romantic. Starts well but loses its way towards the end.
Really enjoyed this film, it was very funny and light hearted but had a serious side to it to; I couldn't believe it when the truth came out! I was gutted! Well worth a watch!
