This very standard live-action version of the popular Japanese animated manga series was written and directed by the team behind Hellbound: Hellraiser II. Martial arts star Gary Daniels plays Kenshiro, the warrior on a mission to restore peace between the warring faction of the Northern and Southern Star, in his post-apocalyptic kingdom. Evil Southern Star chief Lord Shin (Costas Mandylor) has other ideas. It resembles a bad spaghetti western that's been unceremoniously dumped in a science-fiction setting, and Tony Randel's direction fails to match the hyper-kinetic quality of the original cartoon, despite plenty of goofy action spiced up with additional gore.
A live-action remake of the animated film which simplifies the narrative but retains the unpleasantly over-the-top comic-book violence with gouts of blood and exploding heads; the acting is resolutely one-dimensional.
