What is a hero?
By a customer from London , 02 Jan 2007[Highly rated reviewer]
As the American marines land on Iwo Jima and make their way up the beaches on foot, the camera switches to the point of view of the entrenched Japanese soldiers quietly preparing to open fire. It is a gripping scene that makes the film worth watching just for those few minutes alone. The governments exploitation of three surviving soldiers who raised the American flag on Iwo Jima in 1945 - when that iconic photograph was taken - makes an interesting story, but I found the long battle scenes difficult to follow as it was hard to tell the characters apart. Consequently when particular marines were talked about in later scenes it was impossible to put a face to the name. Perhaps that doesnt matter. The difference between a soldiers concept of a hero and that of their families and politicians back home was made clear and that seems to be the message the film is putting across.- Was this review helpful to you?

(197)What Makes a Hero?
By Seedyvee (182 reviews) from Grantham , 31 Mar 2013This is really a study about what makes or does not make a hero rather than about the overall significance of the battle for the island. The chaos and stress of battle combat is strongly depicted relieved by themes of comradeship and the main theme of heroism. There is an amount of past and present time to follow but the film has a satisfying whole.- Was this review helpful to you?

TV Drama Jima
By a customer , 03 Jul 2012Of all the ww2 stories, this seems the least interesting. Although undoubtably an important part of American history, we found it a bit too sentimental. The characters were believable and carried the story well with average cinematography - whats with the 'not colour but not black and white either' thing?! We felt that there are stronger stories from WW2 that need telling.- Was this review helpful to you?

I film that will stay in your memory for a long time.
By themoth (2 reviews) , 29 Jun 2012Might I suggest that people here who have posted a negative review of this film lack a heart. This was one of the most honest and touching films I have ever seen. A film of intelligence and heart, not a mindless hollywood blockbuster. Clint Eastwood is quite simply and astounding director not to mention his awe inspiring career as one of the best actors who have ever lived.- Was this review helpful to you?

dull and uninspiring
By mingles (6 reviews) , 15 Oct 2011i found this dull and was unable to care about the plight of these soldiers in any way really. the exploration of the treatment of native american soldiers was the only time it got vaguely interesting- Was this review helpful to you?
