LOVEFiLM Review Flame And Citron

Or "Flammen and Citronen", as the Danes would have it. Now, this is a true story, but you would think that the resistance would have more imagination, and indeed more sense, than to give their top assassin the codename "Flame" when his most striking physical feature is his blazing red hair.

  • Realistically grim

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Well made, expensive production about underground Danish fighters doing their best to oppose the German occupation. Who does what, to who & why gets a bit confusing - for all the brave effort little seems to be achieved. Very watchable as based on a true story. The Gestapo Head Hoffmann did exist - but did he survive the war?. That's another story!

  • Flawed but worthy

I watched this as I love the Nordic Noir TV productions that have come from Sacandinavia. I also watched it on the back of a couple of French films about the Resisitance in France. The film itself is not Noir, and perhaps a little too 'worthy.' Nevertheless it is well made and the fact that it's the most expensive film made in Danish doesn't suprise me. It captures how it may have felt in occupied Denmark circa 1944. The script works well and all the actors' performances work hard to produce some good performances. However. There are weaknesses. It felt just a bit too long. Maybe I am brainwashed by the Hollywood timeslots but I wanted it to be about 20 minutes shorter. It would have made it much tighter and pacier. I found the introspective nature of some of some scenes slightly irritating and wanted to say 'Just get on with it!' One element of the film was the nature of the relationship between Flame and the head of the local Gestapo, Without spoiling too much of the plot whilst I am always in favour of creating characters that have 3 dimensions I just felt the 'honourable' boss of the Nazi secret police was just unbelieveable. Even so I would say watch it!

A film about the resistance in Denmark and the trials and tribulations that they suffered. Based on true facts the film may be harrowing, but the execution of it was excellent and the cast were exemplary.

  • Strangely named film but watchable.

WW 2 Drama based on true story about the Danish resistance in 1941 set in Copenhagen. Sub titles. I agree that it is a bit long but it is definitely watchable. Has some similarities to The Black Book so if you liked that then this may be for you. Good in the sense that you are never sure who are the goodies and baddies just like the real situation. The relationship between one of the resistance fighters and a glamourous seductress is intriguing as you are never sure which side she is on.

  • Too dull for words!

Dreadfully dull - the worst film I have seen in ages. It never gets going and it may well be a true story but that does not make it a good film subject!

  • Fascinating take on WW2 from a Danish perspective.

A fascinating, if somewhat gruelling account of 2 Danish Resistance assassins, as they struggle with conflict and doubt in their efforts to rid their beloved homeland of the scourge of the Nazi occupiers. Beautiful cinematography complements the dark mood of the film. This film explores moral dilemmas, rather than being an uplifting entertainment. Well worth watching.
