In Adrian Lyne's FLASHDANCE, a young woman, Alex (Jennifer Beals), strives to achieve success as a classical dancer, but economic forces require her to work as a welder by day and an exotic dancer by night. Standing in her way is an abundance of profound social obstacles, not the least of which is her boss at the welding factory, Nick (Michael Nouri), who is also her boyfriend. Alex strives to be accepted into a prestigious ballet academy, and she is furious when she realizes that her boyfriend might be pulling strings for her behind the scenes. Along the road to self-discovery and independence, Alex also struggles to accept love, come to terms with her own stubbornness, and find the inner strength to turn her lofty dreams into reality.
Edited for maximum rhythmic impact, FLASHDANCE is full of glistening bodies and metallic surfaces, powered by Giorgio Moroder's throbbing music and one hit song after another: Michael Sembello's "Maniac," Karen Karmen's "Manhunt," and, notably, Irene Cara's Oscar-winning theme song, "Flashdance...What a Feeling." FLASHDANCE marks the first coproduction between Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson, who geared the film toward the MTV generation.

In this musical drama, Jennifer Beals stars as a welder by day and an exotic dancer by night, but what she really, really wants is to join the Pittsburgh Ballet. Her dream ambition and fluffy romance with Michael Nouri look welded together from other Hollywood fairy tales such as Fame and Saturday Night Fever, yet director Adrian Lyne caught the post-disco visual mood of the time to win over even the most cynical viewer. The title song (featuring Irene Cara) won an Oscar, while a major scandal developed when it was reported that Beals was doubled by Marine Jahan in the strenuous dance scenes.
Depressing to think that this was a huge hit on the back of the Irene Cara hit single, since there's absolutely nothing... read more on Time Out
Great energy and wonderful 80's music.
A message for us all; to believe in ourselves and live in our dreams.
Logically, I shouldn't like this film. It has no real plot, is more a sequence of dance numbers and tableaux and has a cheesy message. But I loved it. The final scene in the Ballet School made me cry, just like the almost identical finale in Billy Elliot, but the energy and joy of the film is overwhelming. Cheesy, but true, when you give up your dream, you die.
'It's all about choices,' Jerry Bruckheimer likes to say. Film producers aren't exactly household names, and most people wouldn't be able to pick Bruckheimer out of police line up, but you'll recognise the lightning bolt on a desert highway that kicks off a Bruckheimer movie: blockbusters like the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, Armageddon, Con Air and Pearl Harbor. His pictures have generated more than $13 billion worldwide, and his TV shows are everywhere: CSI and its multiple off-shoots,... Read more
