Passionate, earnest and totally daft, this post-holocaust racial allegory takes its inspiration from MP Shiel's novel The Purple Cloud. Miner Harry Belafonte lives through an atomic attack and meets two other survivors when he arrives in devastated New York City — gorgeous Inger Stevens and bigoted Mel Ferrer. Can the two men overcome their mutual hatred of each other? And who will get the girl? Aside from a few impressively mounted sequences on the deserted Manhattan streets where the two men stalk each other, this eternal triangle plea for harmony is ultimately condescending and unbelievable.

Hokey but good-looking star melodrama, climaxing with death on an ice floe. A huge commercial success because of the off-screen Garbo-Gilbert romance.

Garbo mesmerises in this classic role

As a fan of Garbo, this was my first time viewing of this film, and I was struck by the high level of filmmaking of such an early (and silent) film. The storyline would have been deeply shocking for the period, showing the very immoral nature of Garbo's character. Garbo and Gilbert stand out as the main actors, though most of the secondary characters can seem a little wooden. The lighting and photography make the most of Garbo, and it's easy to see why millions of cinemagoers were mesmerised by her. Her acting is very good, with more use of body language in this silent movie than in later 'talkies', where her voice added a whole new, fabulous dimension to her on screen persona.

The storyline isn't as complex as today's films, but more than holds it's own.

Well worth seeing, and deserves it's classic status.

    beautiful and mesmorising

i was truly captivated by this film from the early days of silent movies. The acting was extremely powerful. A fact which my thirteen year old son picked up on, as he found himself watching avidly, despite his predujice against all things black and white let alone silent ! very enjoyable and sad. pefect sunday afternoon viewing.
