Spare yourself the pain, do not watch this film. I feel so sorry for Robert Carlyle for getting caught up in this mess. Almost all the acting is unbearable, which fits perfectly with the background music and storyline. Before I rented it, I was curious as to why this film was so unheard of (as it is so recent). Now I understand why nobody has heard of it. My sympathies go out to all those who invested in this film, and I really hope this was the directors first movie. Leave it to the Americans, they seem to know how to make proper films these days. Stick with 'The Day After Tomorrow'!
Got this film out because it had a good cast and enticing premise. But in summary, it started badly, trailed off in the middle; and the less said about the end the better. Contrived plot devices, non-existent characterisation and about as much tension as a liberal democrat party conference. Dreadful example of movie making by numbers. Got so bored that I began reading the reviews of the film half way through, which were infinitely more entertaining.
Special effects were good, but they don't make a film; unfortunately not enough left over to pay a decent script writer. Dialogue was turgid with about as much character development as a coffee advert. I wonder if Nigel Planer really did top himself after seeing the first edit, or whether he was so embarrased he just walked off the set.
The dramatic backdrop of a family estranged by the father's obsession with the barrier was resolved with a whimper and there was no pace or urgency to the direction, nor any sight of the surge heading towards the rest of the greater London, nor of the final solution averting the threat. Evidently even Andy Millman wouldn't have been seen dead as an extra in this one. The final half of the film was just lots of out of place great actors stuck in a room with a stinker of a script.
The worst film I've seen since Robin Hood; Men in Tights, and not half as funny.
