This is an excellent adaptation of James Herbert's fantasy adventure about a man protecting his family from villainous intent when reincarnated as a dog after a fatal car crash. Directed by co-writer Carlo Carlei in a breathtaking style complete with razzle-dazzle visuals, what basically sounds like a children's story becomes one accessible to adults thanks to a host of serious issues raised in a galvanising human context. Good voice-over work from Matthew Modine (as Fluke the mixed-breed puppy) and Samuel L Jackson (playing the wise, older dog, Rumbo) dovetails neatly with fine performances from human stars Nancy Travis and Eric Stoltz in a charming and touching tale sprinkled with special magic.

    Fluffy, Sentimental and...Simply Wonderful!

Whether you're looking for a simply superb Family Film, or something a bit different from the horror-and-shock that James Herbert usually writes, we simply can't recommend this highly-enough.

Without spoiling anything, the hero of this story dies within the first 10 minutes, and is reincarnated as a labrador puppy!

Whilst it seems that most of our 'dumb, furry friends' have no memory of their past lives, our Fluke is just a little different, and heads off to find his wife and son.

Along the way, he meets another dog who is also far from what he seems to be.

A truly heartwarming story of love, friendship and devotion, coupled with a thrilling journey and a great twist - 10/10!!

James Herbert shows his soft side

Based on the James Herbert Novel, a non horror story - the only one he's written that I'm aware of - this is the heart-warming tale of re-incarnation. A guy is killed in a car crash, gets re-incarnated as a stray dog and begins the journey to get back to his wife & son, to show them that he's still with them, albeit as a dog. Along the way ,in flashback, you see his rivalry with his partner & it reveals the kind of man he really was. Very sentimental, but a good story & if you don't have a tear in your eye at the end then you've a heart of stone. Recommended
