This is an excellent adaptation of James Herbert's fantasy adventure about a man protecting his family from villainous intent when reincarnated as a dog after a fatal car crash. Directed by co-writer Carlo Carlei in a breathtaking style complete with razzle-dazzle visuals, what basically sounds like a children's story becomes one accessible to adults thanks to a host of serious issues raised in a galvanising human context. Good voice-over work from Matthew Modine (as Fluke the mixed-breed puppy) and Samuel L Jackson (playing the wise, older dog, Rumbo) dovetails neatly with fine performances from human stars Nancy Travis and Eric Stoltz in a charming and touching tale sprinkled with special magic.
"...A charming, positive message story about love of life in whatever form it assumes..."
Doggedly sentimental fantasy; it sits up and begs to be liked, but lacks bite.
Whether you're looking for a simply superb Family Film, or something a bit different from the horror-and-shock that James Herbert usually writes, we simply can't recommend this highly-enough.
Without spoiling anything, the hero of this story dies within the first 10 minutes, and is reincarnated as a labrador puppy!
Whilst it seems that most of our 'dumb, furry friends' have no memory of their past lives, our Fluke is just a little different, and heads off to find his wife and son.
Along the way, he meets another dog who is also far from what he seems to be.
A truly heartwarming story of love, friendship and devotion, coupled with a thrilling journey and a great twist - 10/10!!
I got this for the kids but i ended up watching it with them. predictable yes but a lovley film, made you go all kind of warm on the inside.
Based on the James Herbert Novel, a non horror story - the only one he's written that I'm aware of - this is the heart-warming tale of re-incarnation. A guy is killed in a car crash, gets re-incarnated as a stray dog and begins the journey to get back to his wife & son, to show them that he's still with them, albeit as a dog. Along the way ,in flashback, you see his rivalry with his partner & it reveals the kind of man he really was. Very sentimental, but a good story & if you don't have a tear in your eye at the end then you've a heart of stone. Recommended

this is one of those films where the main character has to die to see how mean a person he was in life. As a dog though i cant help feeling sory for him and im afraid i shed a tear every time i see it.
I originally rented this movie as I have read the book Fluke, and found it one of the best books I've ever read (and I'm not even into books that much!) As a family film it is very good, my only comment would be that the book was written as an adult book, I wouldn't say it was suitable for children, and so I was expecting more of an adult movie. Although the film is brilliant if you are watching it because you have read the book you will be disappointed as in order to make it a family film alot of the story is changed and alot of the more adult references have been omitted. It has lost alot of the unlying meaning that was in the book. It is a shame really I'd like to have seen it more based on its original story, but if you are just looking for a family film this is one of the best I've seen... very good.
I was so taken with this film that i have now gone out and bought it. My chidren loved it, it made me cry i don't mind admitting as i'm hopeless with these type of films. If you're a sucker for animal films and 'GHOST'appealed to you then watch this film
You have to stick with this film, it can never match the book but they have done a good job of it, last forty minutes is complusive viewing.
Fairly good, if you've read the book then you'll be slighty dissappointed as the film tells the story from a different angle.
Fabulous Sunday afternoon film!! Deffo recommend.
A compelling movie, providing tears laughter and thought. A must see for animal lovers
