    [Highly rated reviewer]

Food Inc is a documentary about the American food system which is perilously controlled by a handful of extremely powerful multinational companies. They treat their employees, consumers and the environment particularly badly, all in the pursuit profit. The film opens with unbelievable shots of the biggest slaughterhouse in the world, where 32,000 pigs are killed each day. After opening with a bang the documentary soon tails off and gets a little unfocused and dull. It seems to be trying to cover too many points and in doing so covers some quite uninteresting subjects, such as a soya bean company suing farmers for breach of patent. It may have been more interesting if the occasional good points were covered in greater detail rather than glazed over, for example, the fact that the American government subsidises the production of corn, which is then used to make junk food is criminally unexplained in great detail. The overriding feeling of the film is the feeling of preaching to the converted. The people who are watching are the organic and locally grown, hummus chomping, middle class liberals who are already converted to decent non-GM food. I don’t believe the film will change many people’s food attitudes and to be honest it won’t entertain that many either, however, it does have its heart in the right place.

I found Food Inc both entertaining and educative. I consider myself quite knowledgeable about food safety issues but, nonetheless, this movie widened my perspective upon some of the powerful corporate food industy´s manipulations in the United States and around the world.

I was highly terryfied to how the system is working US although I was sort of expeting something like this. I am vegan and I am happy not to be part of people who support this kind of brutality.

This will change the way you see the world, like all great films should. This manages to be both terrifying and inspiring at the same time. You leave empowered not scared. Excellent.
