Footloose

This classic tale of teen rebellion and repression features a delightful combination of dance choreography and realistic and touching performances. When teenager Ren (Kevin Bacon) and his family move from big-city Chicago to a small midwestern town, he's in for a real case of culture shock. Though he tries hard to fit in, the streetwise Ren can't quite believe he's living in a place where rock music and dancing are illegal. There is one small pleasure, however: Ariel (Lori Singer), a troubled but lovely blonde--who also has a jealous boyfriend. In fact, it is Ariel's dad (John Lithgow), a Bible-thumping minister, who is responsible for keeping the town dance-free. Ren and his classmates want to do away with this ordinance, especially since the senior prom is around the corner, but only Ren has the courage to initiate a battle. Ren's pent-up frustrations cause a confrontation with Rev. Shaw Moore and the local town council as he takes on the small-town establishment struggling to abolish the outmoded ban and revitalize the spirit of the repressed townspeople. Herb Ross's fast-paced drama is filled with such hit songs as the title track and "Let's Hear It for the Boy."

This is essentially a souped up Elvis Presley-style musical with a daft plot to match, as free-spirited teenager Kevin Bacon fights small-minded minister John Lithgow in a small town where rock 'n' roll and dancing are illegal. Bacon, Lori Singer, Dianne Wiest, Chris Penn and Sarah Jessica Parker perform wonders with a story that hits the drivel button and becomes overly sentimental far too frequently. While Kenny Loggins may not be the first composer you'd think of to write songs for a rock musical, his tunes aren't half bad (the title track got to number six in the UK charts), and the energy raised during the finger-snapping dance numbers is surprisingly infectious.

    Can You Beat This Film

Ok I've just read the previous review submitted to this movie. Er Hum.... Of course it's dated, of course it's full of 80s dancing, because.... IT IS AN 80s MOVIE! What a fantastic movie at that. great story. Love the acting. Something honnest about the performances, like everyone believed in the movies direction. Undoubtedly the best film from the time. I love the dancing, I can do the dancing, it's not camp it's real. People danced like that and they were loved for it. Rent this film, you cannot fail to be impressed and relieved that they got their dance. I challenge anyone to refrain from dancing the whole way through.

    Smokin Bacon

This film still cuts a good rug after all these years. Good soundtrack and cast add to one of Kevin Bacon's best movies.
