Director Sam Raimi follows up his 1998 hit A SIMPLE PLAN with a movie that completes Kevin Costner's unofficial trilogy of baseball films. Told almost entirely in flashback, the film concerns an already legendary 40-year-old pitcher, Billy Chapel (Costner), pitching the last game of his career that also marks the end of what has been, at best, a mediocre season. Going up against the Yankees, Billy remembers, while on the mound, his failed affair with the woman he still loves (Kelly Preston). As the game unfolds and it becomes apparent that he's on track to pitch a perfect game, Billy begins to wonder if he can win her back, and if his ailing arm can make it through nine innings.

Kevin Costner plays the legendary but ageing baseball pitcher desperate to prove there's life in the old dog yet in this glossy but overblown sports drama from director Sam Raimi. A distracted Costner strives to focus long enough to pitch the perfect game, but is hampered by injuries and distracted by thoughts of partner Kelly Preston, who's made a sudden decision to dump him. The attractive leads just about carry it off, but this lacks the edge and humour of such earlier Costner sports outings as Tin Cup and Bull Durham. It's also long-winded and oversentimental, and British audiences may not be sufficiently familiar with the intricacies of baseball to appreciate its nuances.
A movie with limited international appeal, except for those who can take baseball as a metaphor for life; part of the problem is that the life on view here is composed of clichés.
When I received this film I wasn't sure if I really wanted to watch it but i am glad I did. It was really good. Kevin Costner played his part really well - a baseball player not wanting to let something like a career threatening shoulder injury stop him from playing the sport he loved. I initially thought his wife had left him and he'd met another woman but it then appeared things had gone back in time to when he had first met his wife. I have to say that although I was a little confused, it did not stop my enjoyment of what was a really good film.
I read a review that said if you don't know about baseball then don't watch this. Well I do know about baseball so I did. I think you can get buy without knowing that much about baseball. It is more of a romance, and baseball just sets the plot for a guy to review his mistakes in life. It could really be associated with any sportsman coming to the end of thier career.
