Cole Porter's 1943 stage production lost a lot on its transfer to the screen, including Ethel Merman and most of its score apart from the title song. What remains is a typically garish 20th Century-Fox musical, interesting today for the array of talent on display. The plot's a trifle about cousins Carmen Miranda, Vivian Blaine and Phil Silvers (some family tree!) opening up their inherited southern plantation to army wives, and guess what? putting on a show to fund it. Silvers is terrific in a routine that owes much to his vaudeville background, while the gals (including Sheila Ryan and Cara Williams) and that new young crooner Perry Como, also put over numbers with style and verve. Watch closely for a young Judy Holliday, welding away in a defence factory.

    Again and Again and Again

No matter how often I see this film it always gets to me: Bette Midler is great and the songs they stay in the mind for days. The comedy is exceptional and some of the scenes can hit home especially when we think of the young men and women fighting overseas at the moment, this film is well worth watching.

A Fabulous Film - a shame it fell through the net at the box office

I first watched this film when I was about 12, a friend found it in a skip would you believe?? And I have treasured it ever since. It was the first film I had ever watched with Bette Midler in it and now I am a huge huge fan. James Caan and Bette play fantastic roles and the many stages of the film make you laugh, cry, angry and nostalgic. Very American but hey whats wrong with that? Great Soundtrack, great singer and some fabulous costumes. Don't be put off by bad reviews, if you like a good war time film but you like a bit of show biz glamour too...this is perfect!!! Best part of the film is when Bette gets on stage for the first time and shows up James Caan with her crude jokes....FAB!

    Very funny and very moving

If you want to be entertained by Bette Midler, to laugh to cry, to appreciate her singing and acting virtuosity then watch this with awe. This film's underlying message is one of not only one family's loss but the loss of many indicating the cruelty and pointlessness of war. Set over the span of many wars this film is GENIUS in all ways. i do not normally take to these types of film topics but this is definately GENIUS. Be prepared to laugh till your sides hurt and cry uncontrollably.

    Subtitles

I am profoundly deaf and I was watching this film. To my annoyance that the subtitles didn't appear when the actors were singing. It is ridilicious that it doesn't put in the subtitles if it was part of the story! I didn't finish the film because I can't able to stick to it.

    Midler Gold

Bette Midler is excellent, especially during the first 45 or so minutes where she is plainly relishing the chance to sing the 1940's big bands sound. The film goes slightly astray towards the end where the Vietnam War scenes are a little far fetched. James Caan is so out of his depth in this film and cannot keep up with Midler, nor any of the support cast and his performance only goes to highlight his very lightweight and ineffectual acting talent. The makeup for the aging of the characters works well for Midler but only makes Caan look more ludicrous than he is.

    A Lovely Bittersweet Film

Bette Midler is great, she is in her element in this role as Dixie, an aging star who tells her story to an a t.v. gofer - who has gone to pick her up to take her to an awards ceremony. Dixie and her her once time partner Eddie Sparks,(James Caan) is up to receive an award for their contribution to the war effort in entertaining the troops during World War11 and Korea. Dixie's story is funny, romantic and tragic. The songs are grea\t and Bette is at her best. Very enjoyable
