Moore makes his fifth appearance as 007 in this, the twelfth Bond film. In this outing, the renowned British double agent must locate a weapons system known as ATAC, which controls Great Britain's submarines, after it is sunk on a ship in the Ionian Sea. While he must contend with a formidable foe in the villain known as Kristatos (Glover), he does have the lovely and talented Melina (Bouquet), the daughter of a scientist killed by Kristatos, on his side. For fans craving their old favorites, Blofeld, Moneypenny and Q all put in appearances. The stunts come fast and furious, most notably a breathtaking race down a ski slope at the film's opening. Academy Award Nominations: Best Original Song ("For Your Eyes Only").

This 12th entry in the 007 series provides no real surprises, with the exception perhaps of Roger Moore, who gets the chance to show a little bit more grit than usual. The plot revolves around the hunt for a device from a sunken spy ship, with French star (and Chanel model) Carole Bouquet providing a little class as the girl who may hold the key to the puzzle. If Julian Glover is rather subdued as the number one villain, there is a colourful turn from Fiddler on the Roof star Topol as a rogue with shifting loyalties, and the eagle-eyed will spot Charles Dance as a killer. Bond veteran John Glen ensures that the set pieces are spectacular enough and thankfully plays down the gadgetry.
Lively set-pieces can't quite redeem this wholly uninventive addition to the Bond canon. Fun while it's on, but next morning there's nothing left to remember.
Whilst agreeing that everyone is entitled to their view, one does not have to agree with it. Contrary to the view of Time Out quoted here, I am firmly of the belief that this is far and away the best Bond movie of all time.
The scenery and photography are superb, the plot as acceptable (and as unimportant) as ever, charismatic heroes and villains, beautiful heroine and action, action, action all the way. I am sure this is not what some people may find important but it is everything that I require in a Bond movie.
To me, everything is 5 star and by comparison with it, all other Bond movies pale into insignificance. If you have the same requirements as I do in this respect, then hire this as fast as you can; if you have different requirements, then tough! - this is probably not for you.
