Sandra Bullock and Ben Affleck are among the most handsome stars working in Hollywood today and both have proved themselves adept at the romantic comedy genre (she in While You Were Sleeping, he in the superb Chasing Amy). However, they fail to find the requisite chemistry in this otherwise pleasant enough movie — Affleck is fine as the strait-laced groom-to-be who has a Planes, Trains and Automobiles-style trip to his wedding, but Bullock is a little miscast as the quirky gal he hooks up with, who may tempt him away from his waiting bride (played with poignant sincerity by Maura Tierney). That said, the supporting cast (including the fabulous Steve Zahn as Affleck's gormless pal) works hard, and the film does have occasional moments of charm. It's amusing, but not as good as it could have been.

Big Brother: Ben and Casey Affleck

    • 02 Jun 2008

"Boring, complacent and criminally lucky to have got away with everything so far." That was David Thomson's scathing verdict on Ben Affleck in his "Biographical Dictionary of Film" in 2004. It was Ben's "annus horribilis": the year that his planned wedding to J-Lo fell apart. The year that saw him bounce back from the mortifying Gigli debacle with two more back-to-back duds: Surviving Christmas and Jersey Girl. He was considered such box-office poison his cameo in Elektra wound up on the... Read more
