  • Interesting, enjoyable snapshot of complex issues

This is a pretty good film which illustrates the clash of cultures and total lack of understanding almost all westerners have about Afghanistan. Call it naiviety or ignorance or whatever you will - but, as this story depicts, the cultural minefield will get you into as much trouble as the other sort. The film also touches on the factionalism and complex, shifting alliances of the country and the greed of international companies looking to find ways of exploiting new markets in a totally unethical manner. Although set in 1999, in the days of the Taliban regime, the film provides much food for thought regarding the situation in the country a decade on.

  • OKish War Drama

The trouble with this film is that it's riddled with narrative cliches; eg hero climbs a wall while being chased & drops the essential mobile phone, baddie gets stabbed 7 in his death throes accidently shoots other baddies, reliable car suddenly won't start at the exact time its vital to work etc etc.

The whole thing is ok I suppose but Shaun Dooley is not convincing as the hero, and the films coda is simply ridiculous.

The title is absolute pants too, it bears little to the story other than most of it is set in Kandahar. There are some disturbing bits and it will keep you entertained for a couple of hours but its instantly forgettable fare.

A refreshing film, not big budget or with well known actors, but really good to watch. As with a lot of films there are some holes in the story/plot but if you can forgive these it does show how convoluted the situation out there is. Makes a good point how the local warlords and petty officials can defeat all attempts to bring change to the country as they fight to increase their own personal power or wealth. Good intentioned westerners in this situation will be baffled and stymied at every turn - and in the end, in attempting to work with local factions will end up taking sides (and not necessarily with a good outcome)

Good idea but very poor script and acting. Very predictable, not a great cast. All too foten you can guess what will happen next, which inturn makes it very difficult for you to like the characters.

Oh dear! Sorry but this one didn’t do it for me! The opportunity to make a great movie here has been lost. The characters appear to have such a crass lack of knowledge about not only the job they have to do but also Afghan culture that it’s all a little too hard to believe. You can see so many of the ideas that have been attempted seem to ring bells from others films, which succeeded so much more. The flash-backs are over-played and clawing.

The acting is seriously unconvincing and clumsy and the plot not really credible. The final scene is such an obvious and contrived stitch-on that it leaves you wondering how they had the nerve to put it in! Shaun Dooley’s character is poorly cast and his acting is mundane. Dean Andrews needs to pick his parts carefully! Compare him in this and Ashes to Ashes!

The best two bits of the film are the superb location shots that work very well …and the other? It’s the fact that it’s a relatively short film at 1hr 31 minutes!
