This is a bleak little kitchen-sink drama which I remember seeing first time round. Two narrative strands: a young mother driven nuts by her crying baby (a young and impressive Judi Dench), waits for her husband (Norman Rodway) to come home from an all-night bender with his manic mate (Joe Melia); a nightclub hostess (Ann Lynn) and her mooning lover (a middle-aged looking Brian Phelan, optimistically described in the cast list as 'Boy') bicker as they have an adventure on the Thames. Meanwhile the body of a young girl is fished out of the river...
Not a barrel of laughs, this. Well acted and shot (particularly interesting to see the Thames as a working river all the way from Hammersmith to Docklands), but kind of depressing. I remember being impressed by the score (early John Barry), but this time round the simple repeated theme got on my nerves a bit. Worth seeing for Judi Dench and the locations.
